Fixed Footer CSS at Bottom of Page without Overlapping Content

I was trying to fix the footer of my blog to the bottom of the page even when there is less content. What usually happens is , if there is less content on the page then , the footer is moved up and leaves a white space at the bottom of webpage that doesn’t look good. I wanted to make my page similar to Google homepage where it is full width and i also wanted it to be able to scroll down if there is more content on page . So setting the height of page to 100 percent using css wasn’t the option.

I tried a bunch of css suggestions available on the web but most of them didn’t work or were just too long and complicated css rules. Finally fixed my footer at the bottom of page without overlapping any content even on smaller screen sized using this simple css rule

#footer { position: absolute; bottom: 0; height:50px; margin-top;2px; }

What this does is that it assigns a absolute position to the footer div with given height and bottom set to zero that makes footer stick to the bottom of the page. If we keep the css at just that then the footer overlaps with the content on smaller screen sizes , to avoid this problem a top margin is set so that the footer div will always be below top content div on smaller screen sizes . If there is enough space , as in desktop , then footer will always stick to the bottom of the page and there will be no white space at the end even if there is no content.

Example of it’s implementation can be seen on this blog’s homepage where the footer always sticks to the bottom of webpage.

Is it Blogger or Blogspot?

It’s quite normal to have a little confusion about whether it’s called Blogger or Blogspot because this blogging platform is accessed at Blogger.com domain whereas your blogs are hosted on blogspot.com subdomain . So to make things clear just remember that Blogger is the blogging tool that let’s you write your blogs and Blogspot is the free domain where your blogs are hosted .

Blogger : The blogging platform that let’s you manage your blogs for free without you having to worry about server management and all that technical details of hosting a blog.

Blogspot: The free domain service that gives you free subdomain to host the blogs that you create on Blogger platform . This process is automatic so all your blogs are hosted on blogspot subdomain.

How to Change Blog Name and Address

Naming a blog can be a tricky thing as the name you originally chose for your blog might not make sense when you look at it after a few days , although naming your blog should be done carefully in the beginning but for some reason if you want to change your blog name you can do so in the settings of your blogger dashboard.

1. Login to Blogger with your credentials and you will have access to your dashboard.
2. Select the blog whose name you want to change (Drop down from top left corner).
3. Go to the settings tab and there you will see options to edit details about your blog like Title , description and Blog Address. Simply change the blog address and/or title of blog and save your changes.

If you have a fairly new blog then changing your blog address won’t affect your blog much as the your blog will start ranking with the new url but if you have been blogging for a while then maybe it would be better if you avoid changing blog address frequently as this can affect your blog’s ranking in search engine and your blog won’t be accessible from older address .

30 Day Blog Challenge For New Bloggers

Getting more people to read your blog can be challenging especially if your blog is relatively new . One of the challenges faced by new and old bloggers is maintaining consistency in blogging when you are not getting enough visitors to your blog. After all , we all ( with the exception of a few) blog so people would read everything we write , you can’t spread your knowledge or ideas if nobody is listening.

The problem with new blogs is that there is not enough content for blogs to get visitors from search engines like Google and this sometimes discourages new bloggers from continuing to blog . But if you can survive in this tougher period of your blog’s life only then your blog can reach bigger audience .

Regardless, to make any blog successful you have to blog regularly and this can be challenging considering we aren’t always in our writing mode or the secret bag of post ideas is lost in the abyss leaving us staring blank on our computer screen. Anyway , getting back to the topic , i used to blog regularly few years ago and now i thought i should get back to blogging but i am facing some difficulty coming up with new blog ideas and also writing everyday is a bit difficult .

It’s like when you didn’t do any physical movement in years and one day you had to run because some dog was chasing you , you will feel the pain in your body for days because your body isn’t used to do anything. I don’t know if this example makes any sense or not but take it for what it is . Writing blogs is something like this , you have to practice writing and once you get in the flow of writing regularly only then you will create great posts that people will love reading .

So , to overcome my blogger’s block (as in writer’s block) i thought why not challenge myself to writing something everyday for 30 days . This might help me develop the long lost habit of writing regularly and also may help this blog grow a little more. I also invite you to challenge yourself with the same and let’s see how it helps you.

Like any challenge , there should be some rules for this 30 day daily blog challenge to keep us from wandering off to binge watching Netflix . You can create your own rules for this but you have to write and publish a post every single day for a month . Here are some of the rules and suggestions that i’d like to recommend :

Rules:

1. Writing a blog post every single day without any breaks.
2. Write only original content , no copying from other places on internet.
3. Seriously  follow rule 1 and rule 2 again -.-
4. You can write about any topic you like but i’d like to recommend that you choose a topic relevant to your blog and only write about that , this way it will significantly help your blog .
5. I think we should also define a limit of minimum words that each post should follow , Something like 500 words but it’s totally up to you as you are your own judge for this challenge.

I encourage you to create your own rules for this challenge and remember to not set any impossible to achieve rules , keep it easy and simple .

I will be posting on this blog as part of my 30 day blog challenge starting today , I hope i don’t fail myself . Also , i will share the results of my experience during this challenge and i’d suggest you to do the same as it will help your readers and also you personally . Also , to keep myself accountable i will be adding the list of posts i publish each day below , Just to make sure that i don’t forget that i gave me this challenge.

Don’t Look at the Word Count When Writing Blog Post

Don’t look at the count of words as you are writing a blog post , infact don’t even think about it . The more you focus on increasing the word count of your blog post , more likely it is that you will compromise the quality of your post. Your blog post should be just as long or short as it needs to be , there is no rule on what should be the length of your post. Just make sure you convey your message clearly to your audience and don’t worry if your post isn’t long enough , remember you are writing for people not search engine bots.

Personal Blog vs Social Media Micro Blogging

Blogging is like writing a journal online and sharing it with the world so everyone can read your thoughts and experiences. In one way or another you have been already blogging especially if you use some sort of social media that allows you to share information with your friends or family. That is why these social media platforms are often reffered to as micro blogging sites. So ,you might ask what exactly is the difference between personal blog and a micro blog , there is technically no difference between the two forms of blogging as personal blog can also be a micro blog.

A micro blog ,as the name suggests , is short form of blogging where you don’t neccessarily write long detailed articles but you have the option if you wan’t to explain something in details . Most microblogging sites , with the exception of a few like twitter , don’t put any limit on the number of words that you can write in a single post.

A personal blog is completely maintained by you and you don’t have to rely on social media sites , whose rules can change anytime, and also gives you some sort of privacy that is a big problem with most platforms . So if you are concerned about your private information being used by facebook or twitter than you can always start your own personal blog and do anything you like with it like sharing pictures of cats or writing your daily thoughts. You can use it however you like and you don’t have to worry about anyone (*cough* Mark Zuckerberg) collecting your information.

Most people are reluctant to start a personal blog because it seems like something extremely techninal to start a blog but in reality it’s as simple as just opening an account somewhere . If you are interested in starting your own personal blog than i would recommend you to look at blogger , wordpress or tumblr blogging platforms where millions of blogs are already created by people just like you.Give it a try ,you will understand that it’s not that difficult to have your own blog and it also feels good to have control over your content.

Personal blogs do sound good but there is a slight catch , it will take some time before your audience grows and people are able to find your content considering there is a lot of content on internet to be found . So you will need some patience and consistent posts on your blog so people will find your particular blog interesting enough. Just like on social media you have to work on increasing your audience . If you blog regularly and provide valuable content in your post then eventually you will find that more people are interested in reading your opinions.

Desipte all the privacy issues , microblogging on social media has it’s own perks as your content is discovered relatively easily by your target audience (that is the people who would like to see the kind of stuff you are posting). If you are comfortable with making videos then youtube is probably the best place to start your blogging (often called vlogging ) . If you are into photos then Instagram , facebook or twitter for text posts.

Another problem with using these social media platforms for daily blogging is that they don’t share any revenue with you except YouTube where you can get some compensation for your work. So if you are even remotely interested in generating some revenue from your blogs then starting a personal blog is definetly your best choice. You can obviously maintain a social media profile also to get people to your personal blog .

Creating a Blog is the Easy Part of Blogging

Creating a blog is the easy part of blogging . The difficult part is to maintain a blog with consistency and coming up with new posts regularly. Some bloggers choose to post only about a specific topic on their blog while some don’t limit themselves and write about anything that interests them . Both approaches work in different situations .

My recommendation would be to start by creating a personal blog where you post about topics that you are passionate about and also have some knowledge. Keep this blog as your base of operations , write about your life , interesting topics or anything that catches your interests . This kind of personal blog will help you in learning some of the basics of blogging and also grow your base audience. You will understand what works and what doesn’t work for you.

Once you have a primary blog setup , you can experiment with creating new blogs centered around a specific topic. Such blogs are called niche blogs or can also be micro-niche blogs. The advantage of niche blogging is that if your entire blog is about only one topic (let’s say photography ) then it’s easier to attaract audience that is interested in that specific topic and your blog will be seen as an authority site in that niche. This also helps your posts rank better in search engines that are a major source of visitors to your blog site.

Regardless of what approach you use to start your first blog , it always takes times for your blog to be discovered by people and search engines , so you might not see much views in the first few months of your blogging . The key thing here is to keep on blogging and eventually your will get the results.

The initial objectives for new bloggers should be just to provide valuable content that isn’t available anywhere on the internet while learning yourself.Don’t be afraid to experiment different things on your blog as that’s the best way to learn new and exciting things and don’t overthink about getting views to your blog .

Internet in a Nutshell

Internet was created in 1990 by CERN physicist Tim Berners-Lee and became free to use by everyone in 1993. The free internet meant that anyone can publish documents and make them publicly  accessible to everyone in the world via a public Internet Protocol (IP) address. These IP addresses , used to locate files and documents on the internet , are further referenced by Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or web addresses (like example.com) that are easy to remember . The publicly accessible document is often referred to as a webpage and collection of webpages is called a website. Modern webpages are written in html including various css styles , scripts or images and hosted on one or more web servers which are basically computers that have publicly accessible webpages or files.

“He wove the World Wide Web and created a mass medium for the 21st century. The World Wide Web is Berners-Lee’s alone. He designed it. He loosed it on the world. And he more than anyone else has fought to keep it open, nonproprietary and free.”
—Tim Berners-Lee’s entry in Time magazine’s list of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th century, March 1999.
